In der Newton‘schen Betrachtung der Physik werden Massenpunkte und Ihre Koordinaten betrachtet. Das bedeutet, dass jeder Massenpunkt (im üblicher Weise dreidimensionalen Raum) 3N Freiheitsgrade besitzt. Da in der Realität oft ( :<math>{{\nu }_{Max}}</math>) Zwangsbedingungen (f) und Zwangskräfte auftauchen ist das System durch 3N Koordinaten meist überbestimmt. :<math>{{f}_{\nu }}\left( {{\mathbf{r}}_{\mathbf{1}}},...,{{\mathbf{r}}_{\mathbf{N}}},t \right)=0,\,\nu \le {{\nu }_{Max}}</math> (2.1) Es gilt also eine klügere Formulierung des Systems zu finden. Da Klugheit bekanntlich die Konzentration auf das wesentliche ist, versucht man den Systemzustand durch so wenig wie möglich Koordinaten zu beschreiben. Man verwendet also S Koordinaten, also so viele wie Freiheitsgrade im System vorhanden sind. :<math>S:=3N-{{\nu }_{Max}}</math> (2.2) Die Verallgemeinerten Koordinaten bilden eine Basis des Konfigurationsraums. :<math>KONF:=\left\langle {{q}_{1}},{{q}_{2}},\cdots ,{{q}_{S}} \right\rangle </math> (2.3) Nimmt man die Zeit hinzu so wird Ereignisraum erzeugt. :<math>ERG:=\left\langle {{q}_{1}},{{q}_{2}},\cdots ,{{q}_{S}},t \right\rangle </math> (2.4) Es gibt also eine bijektive Abbildung zwischen realem (Raum-Zeit Raum) und dem Ereignisraum. :<math>{{\mathbf{r}}_{i}}\left( t \right)={{\mathbf{r}}_{i}}\left( q,t \right),q\in KONF,i\le N</math> (2.5) Die Lagrangemechanik operiert im Ereignisraum, dies stellt schon einen gewissen Vorteil gegenüber der Newtonschen Mechanik dar. Allerdings werden immer noch 2S Anfangsbedingungen benötigt um ein System vollständig zu beschreiben. Daher wird später in der Hamilton Mechanik der Konfigurationsraum durch den verallgemeinerten Impuls zum Phasenraum ausgebaut. :<math>PQ:=\left\langle {{q}_{1}},\cdots ,{{q}_{S}},{{p}_{1}},\cdots ,{{p}_{S}} \right\rangle </math> (2.6) So wird eine Topologie gefunden in der die Kenntnis eines Punktes des so genannten Zustandsraums das Gesamtsystem vollständig charakterisiert. :<math>ZR:=\left\langle {{q}_{1}},\cdots ,{{q}_{S}},{{p}_{1}},\cdots ,{{p}_{S}},t \right\rangle </math> (2.7) Dieses Verfahren wird auch in der Quantenmechanik angewandt.
